Did you know that sprinkler systems, so essential for fire safety, have been around for over 150 years? That’s right! From the earliest, simplest models to the intelligent systems we use today, this technology has undergone a true revolution—and it’s still evolving.
It all began in 1872 when American engineer Henry S. Parmelee developed and patented the first automatic sprinkler. The idea was simple but already functional for the time: a valve would release water automatically when the heat from a fire reached a certain level, breaking a fusible element. Even without modern sensors, the system was a significant advancement in fire protection. Throughout the 20th century, especially during the 1920s and 1950s, sprinklers became increasingly common in industrial settings, where the fire risk was higher. A major milestone came in 1953, when engineer John J. McDonald introduced the adjustable sprinkler head, bringing greater flexibility in installation and improved system performance.
As time went on, the technology only got better. During the 1980s and 1990s, sprinklers began to integrate with smoke detectors, heat sensors, and even thermal cameras, making fire response faster and more effective. This allowed sprinklers to be used in a broader range of settings—from shopping centers to residential buildings. In recent years, the focus has been on two key themes: intelligence and sustainability. New sprinkler systems are increasingly connected, forming part of building automation and the Internet of Things (IoT). These systems not only detect fires with more precision but also adjust water flow based on fire intensity, helping to reduce waste. Additionally, the materials used in these systems have improved—today they are more durable, eco-friendly, and corrosion-resistant.
All of this evolution shows how technology is a powerful ally in safety. What began as a simple protective device is now part of a complete, intelligent, and adaptable system—designed to save lives, protect property, and preserve resources.
At Grupo AMJ, we closely follow every innovation in the sector and implement solutions that combine efficiency, responsibility, and cutting-edge technology. Because when it comes to fire safety, preparation makes all the difference.
